I did my fair share of file sharing back in the day but I always thought bands, especially new bands, need to be supported. People have this misconception that musicians are rich, they should be, especially if they are selling millions of records but that is not the case. If you love a band, pay for their music. They create something that brings you so much joy and happiness, give back.
The other thing that struck me was how companies love to take advantage of artists. I have been researching publishing companies and discovered that quite honestly they do something similar. Not to the extent that musicians have to deal with but the publisher takes most of the money when it doesn't cost all that much to publish a book and quite often they don't even market the book unless it is selling well to start with. So they edit your book, cut you a check and sit back and wait to see if you can get people to buy your book for them. It's harder doing it myself but I think I would rather keep the rights to my work and not be beholden to some company that cares little for my actual success.
Watch the show, you'll learn quite a bit.
